Super Mario Maker 2 is coming to the Nintendo Switch. The sequel was revealed during a Nintendo Direct presentation in February. As you probably guessed from the title, this will be a sequel to Super Mario Maker for the Wii U and not an updated port of the Wii U game.
That’s a little bit surprising considering that the Wii U version was a feature-heavy content creator with a ton of user-created maps already available. We’re not sure at this time whether or not there will be any way to transfer those levels from the Wii U version of the game to the sequel. However, it would be a shame to lose all of that content.
We assume that Super Mario Maker 2 will at least feature all of the tools seen in the Wii U version, but the first preview of the game didn’t make it entirely clear if that was the case. Instead, it offered a few looks at what new content we can expect from this sequel. That includes new items (Mario’s cat costume!), a few new tools, and a plethora of new levels.
It doesn’t appear that Super Mario Maker 2 will introduce a new era of Mario gameplay (we still see Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros., and what appears to be Super Mario 3), but it could be that Nintendo is just waiting to reveal those major additions.
Speaking of major additions, some fans have already noticed that Luigi appears to be a playable character this time around. At the very least, we see him at the end of the game’s debut teaser trailer wearing a hat alongside Mario. While it seems easy enough to speculate that this game will let you play as Luigi, the more interesting possibility is that Super Mario Maker 2 will let you build two-player levels.
While many people expected Super Mario Maker for Wii U to be ported to the Nintendo Switch when Nintendo revealed they had unannounced Switch titles coming in 2019, nobody is going to balk at a proper sequel to the game (as long as it retains the deep toolkit of the original as well as the ability to easily upload and share your custom levels online).
Here’s everything else you need to know about the game:
Super Mario Maker 2 Gameplay Details
Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker 2 Direct stream revealed quite a few new details about the new game.
The biggest among those additions is certainly the new story mode. Yes, Mario Maker now has a story that involved needing to rebuild the Mushroom Kingdom by collecting coins as you complete levels. This makes Mario Maker 2 much closer to a traditional Mario game for those who desire such an experience.
Those who enjoy making their own levels in the game will be thrilled to learn that Super Mario Maker 2 will benefit from quite a few new tools. These include slopes, switches, suns, and a host of new mechanics that have never been in a Mario game before. The latter list includes swinging claws, shells that let you move across lava, and even cars. You can even make auto-scrolling levels and levels that demand a certain win condition. Super Mario 3D World levels will further benefit from exclusive mechanics such as cat suits and glass pipes.
Finally, Super Mario Maker 2 will support cooperative building and co-op play with up to four players. All things considered, it sounds like everything we could have asked for in a Super Mario Maker sequel.
